How we Started

A side by side comparison of the latrine we started with and what we have now in that order
"For Attractive lips, speak words of kindness. For lovely eyes, seek out the good in people. For a slim figure, share your food with the hungry. For beautiful hair, let a child run their fingers through it once a day. For poise, walk with the knowledge that you never walk alone. People, more than things, have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed, and redeemed. Remember, if you ever need a helping hand, you will find one at the end of each of your arms. As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands, one for helping yourself and the other for helping others." - Sam Levenson

Uganda is a third world country. With this comes all the problems of poverty and diseases that arise from poor sanitation and other factors. After very carefull observation of the community of Bunjakko, I (Ssendawula Ronald) decided that there was something that could be done to help (even a little bit) the situation in this community. Alot of Children had lost their parents to diseases like HIV/AIDS, Cholera and Bilharzia.

Young girls had resorted to prostitution as a survival measure. With this of course came the early marriages and pregnancies that increased the risk of STDs among young children.

Young boys had resorted to fishing and petty theft.

Seeing this condition, I decided to pool some of my money and created a wooden structure to act as a classroom and a polyethene covered pit latrine to help with the sanitation.

Since a lot of children were homeless and there wasn't enough money to build permanent structures, I talked to some people in the local community and they accepted to live with some of the children. These children would then come to my school to receive education.

In 2012, I sold off my small farm in my ancestral village and used that money to set up a permanent structure and permanent latrine. The structure constisted of 3 classrooms and a home for the homeless orphans which allowed me to transfer some of the children from the families I had entrusted them with to the home.

We started by supporting 40 children of which 25 were girls and 15 boys. We are happy to say that currently we support hundreds of children through the various projects we have going on in the Bunjakko community.

Inorder to help more children, I realised I needed more money and that required help from other people. This then prompted the creation of the Arise and Shine Organization. I made all the necessary legal arrangements and contacted a friend of mine to help with the design of this website. We are very hopeful that it will help us reach many more likeminded people around the globe and that together we will help make the world a better place.
